Our Big Green Philosophy…

The idea for the Big Green Market was a lightbulb in dark times…..

After the global pandemic, two lockdowns and huge financial troubles, our community faced some very difficult times.

Local groups and charities were struggling because traditional fundraising activities were not possible and people couldn’t access their services.

People were becoming more and more isolated - stuck at home with nowhere to go.

Lots of people were so bored and had massive clear outs (our cupboards and attics had no idea what was going on!) only to learn there was nowhere to put the boxes and boxes of STUFF we were clearing out!

We knew as soon as the tips were back open, there would be a huge surge in items getting chucked in landfill. And we knew 80% of those items could be cleaned up and given a whole new lease of life by savvy shoppers looking to save cash.

The Big Green Market was a way to help with all of these problems

Since July 2021 we’ve been doing just that. The Big Green Market has always been about finding sustainable ways to connect and improve our local community, and to impact the world in positive ways.

We provide a happy and fun space to come each month for shoppers to catch up with friends, find some bargains and get out of the house rain or shine.

Our volunteers have made the BGM an incredible team to be part of. We’ve all made new friends, discovered new hobbies, joined new groups as a result of the connections made, and having a sense of purpose gives us all a sense of immense pride.

Of course, we’re all working hard to give back to the community that we love so much. Local groups and charities receive funding for projects and a regular platform to get into the public space and connect with the people they serve.

Customer talking to volunteer

We know you have lots of questions about BGM so here are some FAQs,

  • No we don’t take worn undies.

We don’t actually sell undies unless they are brand new and unopened but we can put you in touch with a Burntislander who collects items in excellent condition for Smalls for Africa.

  • No thanks.

It does take our Cinderellas (quality control team) quite a lot of time to go through everything so please make their task easier by sorting through things before you donate.

  • Yes please, we PAT test everything before selling it on so we don’t accidentally kill our customers.

We have so many people to say THANK YOU to, especially Burntisland & Kinghorn Church of Scotland and the Toll Community Centre for being such supportive hosts, and to people who do the little things like bringing our team sweeties and scones, growing plants and painting stones for us to sell and generally giving our team that warm and fuzzy feeling.

Thanks also to our funders who believed in us and helped us to grow.
