If you love it, repair it (don’t bin it!)

Repair, Reuse, Re-love

The BGM Repair Cafe is an initiative to keep items out of landfill (and money in everybody’s pockets)

We know there is an increasing appetite for buying pre-loved items and extending the life of things we already have at home. Our team of volunteers share our passion for reducing landfill and using our resources wisely. The Repair Cafes are held at the Toll Community Centre in Burntisland.

There are no guarantees that we can fix everything but we will do our best to help to mend clothing, undertake small electrical repairs, fix bicycles and whatever people bring in. Our qualified PAT testers can check the safety of electrical equipment too. Donations are welcome but there is no charge for people coming to the Repair Café, we’ll even have the kettle on and make you a cuppa!

Fixer rewiring a broken item

What kind of things can you fix?

Our team specialise in relatively quick fixes for every day items, not to be confused with the TV Repair Shop programme where a team of experts work for days on end on treasured antiques! So far we’ve rewired electrical kitchen gadgets and lights, altered clothes, got bicycles back on the road, sorted out IT issues, fixed power tools, mended teddy bears and lots more.

Are the Fixing Team qualified experts?

Some are, some aren’t. Think of our Fixers as a friendly neighbour who almost certainly knows more than most people about repairing.

Can I bring electrical items along?

Absolutely, we have qualified PAT testers on our team and we safety check everything before trying to fix thing to make sure that nobody gets blown up.

What if you can’t fix it?

Well, at least you’ll know that you tried!

The next Repair Cafe isn’t for a few weeks, where else can I try?

Our friends at Grow West Fife Repair Cafe or Dairsie Repair Cafe might be able to help. Another great resource is Circular Community Scotland’s Repair and Share Network.

Youtube is also a source of great information and repair videos, lots of fairly simple fixes can be found online, its always worth a look.

Are you looking for any more Fixers?

Oh absolutely! If you enjoy helping people and are nifty at at fixing things we’d LOVE to hear from you. All expenses and training costs will be covered. We are always happy to meet for a cuppa and chat to get to know our Fixers too.

Looking for repair advice?

Sometimes repairs are quick and easy and can be done in no time at home.

As we discover common quick fixes, we’ll add them here to try and point you in the right direction, don’t forget that Google and YouTube are your friends too!
